Drove a friend's BMW 325xi this weekend...

let's start with tires...
what kind of rubber is on your A4? on your buddy's BMW?
there are huge variables that influence the handling of both cars - including suspension (stock or sport package), tires, and amount of wear on each individual car and the primary components...
let's get specific here.
generally, when you drive both models comparably equipped, they feel relatively similar in terms of overall control, although BMW usually does have a slight advantage in overall feel (but not always). your comment about control doesn't really make sense unless some other variable is influencing your car (e.g., worn or cheap tires).

I test drove a 325xi before I bought my A4 and I agree with you on
how tight the steering felt. The brakes were also much grabbier and the acceleration off the line seemed quicker as well. I wasn't a fan of the "hard looking" interior and I didn't want to drive a car that seemingly have of the USA drives.

Good point - I don't know all the details, but here's what I know...
She is driving a 2005 325xi non-sport package, but I'm not sure which tires. I'm driving a 2004 sport package with Goodyear Eagle RS-A All-Season tires. I have 17,000 miles on mine, and she just got hers, so less than 500 miles. I realize the sport package is tighter, and you feel all the bumps in the road, but I don't think that would affect handling negatively, although I may be wrong...

Tires may have something to with it, since yours are much older than the ones on the Bimmer. I have a sport package as well, and as far as "pushing" the car, it handles better. However, for everyday driving, not the best ride ever since it is a little lower and the bumps are more apparent and the car almost feels "harsh". So, depends on what type of handling you are talking about. Everyday driving vs. really "driving" the car.

True... BMW definitely feels different on the road
I also drive around 01 5 series. Compared to my 02 A4, it feels very different. The steering wheel is a lot tighter, car feels a lot heavier but once you're on the road, you feel secure and feel like the car is grabbing the road. But, Audi feels quicker and smoother. Especially with CVT, the car accelerates without the feeling of gear shifting. I am not sure about the new 5 or 3 series but I guess they can't be that different from previous series..or are they.

Sounds like you're describing tramlining...
You are on wider and probably well worn tires probably driving on pavement that is less than smooth. Maybe you should look into some 16 inch wheels with narrower tires.
