DV; can't decide...
I'm trying to decide on a DV for my upcoming MTM Stage 2 upgrade. I have used the TurboXS RBV-25 for 65K miles on my 1.8t VW with flawless results, but thinking to try another one. The OEM Sport 110 was recommended and even MTM has tested it and approved for use with 400-500hp set ups. Thing is with that, I think tuners/dealer choose to use the OEM out of ease of; cost, replacement, no brand name to pick, and simply because it is OEM and that it makes it easier to deal with if there is a problem. I'm sure it works well (and I believe MTM), but it is still OEM, which means it's disposeable, materials are different (inside/out), it likely will not last as long, and it cannot be serviced. Even MTM mentions that; "if it makes noise,.... has problems,... blah, blah, blah,... to just replace it. That's why some tuner/dealers use it. It's much easier to them to just throw it away and get another one. It's not really about it being made to perform or work better, or last (even though it will work). It's about it being OEM and non-serviceable. It is said to work (as mentioned by MTM under high boost), but I do wonder how long it will last though under that increased boost and if failure is just an acceptable part of using it because it can simply be replaced at a relatively low cost. In the end, it may prove cheaper if you only replace it once or twice. Maybe you won't need to replace it either. But the parts are still geared towards OEM use and not for increased power/use, and since it is getting more of a work-out, it makes more sense to have a DV that is made for that - doesn't it? To me, the aftermarket DV makes more sense.
My TurboXS RBV-25 has been running for 65K miles now (w/o incident) and I cleaned it once recently, when I began to notice some hesitation. That seems pretty good to me. The materials they use for the aftermarket ones are different for the piston, seal/rings, spring,.. etc. They are made to last longer and be stronger, have far less chance of failure and perform better. I'm sure though that the OEM 110 would work fine though. I just have a hard time choosing it. Too much conditioning by aftermarket I guess ; )
The other point is; with these aftermarket DV's, they do have spring adjustments and that can affect how it holds boost (longer/shorter). I never got into adjusting my RBV-25 and used it as is. Should you even consider adjusting it though? That could cause problems. How do you know if an aftermarket DV is set to operate within the correct perameters of your engine performance mods? Most just say that they are direct replacements for OEM, so you use them as is. They also say that they are better then OEM for performance upgrades/increased boost. So does that mean they operate slightly different in terms of spring tension? Would you need to adjust them depending on how much boost is being run or the ECM SW being used? Does it matter? That's one aspect of getting into more "adjustable" aftermarket parts; when the end user does not know enough about it. I just want a DV to use and not have to "fine tune".
Now I just have to pick one (kind of leaning towards the Forge 007P). I'm not interested in the BOV, or BOV/DV adjustable types. I don't need to get into all of that. Just a well made and performing aftermarket DV is fine for me. I won't be running a "hot-air-intake", so I'm not overly concerned about having that "blow-off" sound (did that in my VW).
Your thoughts, experiences, recommendations,...?
Here's my picks;
Forge 007P $130
Forge DVR $150
Hyperboost $140
TurboXS RBV-25 $169
OEM 110 $55

The tech bulletin referring to noisy BPVs referred to earlier models, not the sport 110...
I think your going to be hard pressed to find problems with the sport 110 and justify spending more money. Heck, I used the stock BPV on my B5 Stage III setup for 15,000 miles and never had a problem. I tracked that car as well. I think you'll be fine with any of these BPVs. If you like the looks of the metal ones, than that may justify the extra cost for you. Otherwise just stick witht the sport 110. Thats my .02. Cheers! Mike
