My radio sudeenly started to go quiet intermittently, no sound but all the buttons work and no sound from the CD either. Is there an amp somewhere that's cutting out or is it the headunit?

These symptoms are similar to a bad ground. Pull the radio and check your wiring. If it looks ok and well grounded it may be the head unit. I'm not certain on the secondary amp on the B6, so it might be at fault. Might want to look for a DIY

Thanks, from more reading it seems to be an amp in the rear for rear speakers and the subwoofer but my understaning is that the fronts are driven from the headunit so if this is correct, looks like it could be the headunit. Anyone knows if this is correct?

I did some quick digging and it seems like you got it sorted right. Perhaps your head unit is no longer sending signal out put to the speakers or line level out put to the amp. Seems like a dead headunit or a bad ground.

This started after the heavy rains we had here in the Northeast and have now resolved itself after the nice weather we had at the end of last week so it's likely I have a leak somewhere.
