is ECU the actual chip or the whole computer-harddisk-like thingy?

most of the time with todays ECU's you just ship out your ECU to the tuner and they install the chip for you, then all you do is re-install the chip in your car
a good way to prevent downtime is to attend a event the tuner goes to (and does on site chipping), sometimes the tuner will even remove and reinstall the ECU at no extra charge

I've read on the board that for '02, there are some physical ways to detect that the ECU has been removed, as well electronic info stored in other locations on the car. If the chip tuners can't find work-arounds for these, then there's less sense in buying a second ECU.
It might still be useful in keeping the dealer from starting to think about chip mods by returning performance to stock, but even then APR and GIAC have switching technology that lets you change back to stock programming without switching out the ECU.
Hmm.

if the dealer notices that the ecu has been removed, that can simply be resolved by telling said dealer there were troubles with the previous ecu, and that it needed to be replaced with another OEM piece
as for traps ... I don't know how usefull detering tuning is as it could very well make the car less desireable. Sure it would save on warranty repairs but what is the percentage of Owners that modify their cars?

Mine said they are chip friendly. That's not much, if any, protection in the case they want to stick me, but...
The CVT 220ft/lb torque thing seems well known by everybody, so bring a blown CVT in and expect scrutiny.
Otherwise, I'm assuming if I bring mine in with stock ECU performance, they'll fix warranty issues. If not, can't warranty repairs be carried out by certain non-dealers?
