We have a handfull of steep mountain passes in my area, and I've found my '03 avant 1.8T 5sp to be one of the worst engine brakers I've ever driven. Do any of you know why this car takes off so freely on downhills? My other car is also a 1.8, but its a supercharged benz 6 speed, and engine braking is half decent. Do the additional revs on the downhill provide turbo boost without your foot on the gas?
Just wondering if there's anything I can do. I love the A4, I just wish it could start from 0mph on an uphill (probably a pipe dream for a 1.8T), and I really wish I could engine brake downhill.
cheers

The turbo doesn't build boost under closed throttle, it is in vacuum.
And the quattro doesn't create as much drag going downhill as it does when trying to accelerate.
My 3.0 V6 is a little better downhill, I too have a small mountain I have to go over to get to the highway near my house.

with programming to enhance engine braking. I think it may be that the MT is not as good as the tip trans at this. Do you downshift for downhills? On my '03 1.8T Tip, it's very noticable when the ECU acts to increase engine braking on down hills, with the gas pedal released.

...the torsen does not lock or inhibit speed differences under braking, thus allowing all 4 wheels to rotate independently at their own speeds when no power is applied. The torsen diff only locks in a power application situation...

I have same car and I wish it had a freewheel function in top gear, meaning clutch would back off on downhills and I could coast.
If I pop into neutral I coast for miles withouot slowing down much, free $3 mpg.
I know ECU cuts gas off coasting in gear etc, but you can watch the mpg meter climb faster in neutral, and go a lot farther before gassing it again.
I never accelerate past 70 on any downhill coast.
