and some more info on timing chain system here, which quotes the same response from Audi, although points at the tensioner/adjuster.
this did all start as the weather got that bit cooler here, but I still cant imagine I'd be luck enough to get away with an oil change!?
or do I just sell the car and tell the buyer... look, here's what audi says... "its normal"... certainly doesnt sound it!

I would go the oil route; find out what was used to service, if you can't confirm, replace with one of the high quality oils in the sepc list. Again, assume the 2.0 uses the same spec as the 1.8t.
So my input about the noise on startup and selling. The 03 I have now was purchased with a bad adjustor. I knew this, but had a warranty for 3 months from the seller. I waited about 2 months, took it to my indie, and said "hmm, my adjustor is bad" and got it replaced under the warranty. If I were looking at the car, I would either have that in my hip pocket or adjust the price based on it being bad, but that's just me.
