This is confusing as you may have posted against an incorrect post:

1) The G28 engine speed sensor (some call this a crank position sensor) does not drive the speedometer; it feeds engine RPM to the ECU and the tachometer. It is located below the oil filter on the lower right hand side of the block and mounts perpendicular to the ground. There is no cap to remove or anything like that. You replace an existing part. The hole some have noticed it to use a timing light on the flywheel teeth and shouldn't have a cap. Don't have to remove any caps to replace the sensor.

2) If your speedo is bad, you might need a Vehicle Speed Sensor or G22 sensor. It mounts to the tranny in the same general area. The picture you have appears to be the correct picture. Again, you are replacing a part. Need to look some more. Will also offer the following link as a possibility to your problem.

After June -July they of 02 Audi stopped ussing G28 for Speedo. From then on they use abs speed sensor on driver front wheel hub. (Left front side). So it really depends what month and year your car is.

Don't think they ever used the G28 (mounted in the side of the block); it measures engine speed which won't tell you car speed without the gear and type of transmission. They stopped used the G22 sensor (mounted in the tranny) for vehicle speed in 2002. That was the gist of my post.
