excessive oil usage: the latest test
My car is using oil more or less like a skid row bum drinks wine, that is a lot. In an effort to find if the problem is related to do the valves or cylinder head the dealer did a compression and leak down tests. Following are the results:
cyl/compression/cylinder leak
1/150psi/5%
2/150psi/5%
3/160psi/4%
4/150psi/1-2%
5/155psi/5%
6/160psi/5%
What do you audi worlders think of these numbers. The car uses lost of oil but by these numbers, I don't think its because the oil got into the combustion chamber. It doesn't seem to be burning the but instead tossing oil overboard out the exhaust. If April visits this message board, what say you?

Excess oil consumption is such an Audi thing...
My friend's A4 2.0 has the same issue as yours. The oil light comes on every 6 months and the engine needs to be topped up with at least 1 litre of oil. Her car has run the full compression test too and cannot find the cause. Now, she has given up and just replenishs the oil when required (every 6 month isn't that bad).
The color of the exhaust gas looks normal. Not a hint of blue, which is typical of a engine burning oil.
Interestingly, she checks the ground of her car space and no oil has been found soon far. If no oil is physically leaking from the engine, but the oil level keeps dropping, it has to be burnt up. There is no other way. May be the engine is burning oil REALLY slowly. =)

try once a week or 1qt for every 500mi, my toyota 4wd 1qt/2000mi
...which I thought was excessive. All engines burn some oil. Accepted normal is about 1qt/2kMi. Most car companies will fix a new engine when it uses 1qt/1kMi

I was stupid, I believed the maintenance sch'd and blew the timing...
belt at 90k, 15k before the recommended belt replacement. Before the engine used minimal oil and after I got it back with the rebuilt valve train it drinks oil

Here's my theory
We have the PCV that floats within the system.
Every now and then, oil gets blown into the intake track.
It gets combsted. Even if it's a little whiff once every week, it's enough to drop your oil level. other than that, it's difficult to explain the loss of engine oil absent a visible leak.

I agree, I think its crankcase ventillation related but the pcv valve was replaced. If anything the oil usage got worse. Everyone is scratching their heads. The engine runs great with no visible oil usage on plugs and pistons.
