excessive oil usage: the latest test
#11
Does your rebuid invoice say you got new valve stem guides? You can put a piece of paper over exhaust
like a white 3x5 to see of any oil is coming out, I suspect it is. You can try Auto-Rx to recondition your valve stem seals and clear the piston rings.

was my 1st thought the 1st time...
but the leak down and compression tests don't support that. Besides, twice? They rebuilt the top end a second time. thanks, your ideas are insightful.

The compression and leak down tests indicate the rings are OK. ...
If there are any deep scratches, the comp/leak tests would not be OK for the effected cylinders. And, would be visable with the heads off.

You must be joking---nothing excessive about needing a liter/6 months.
All engines must consume some oil, to get adequate lubrication. The oil is best checked when fueling..NOT by waiting for the low oil light to illuminate. When the light turns on, that means oil pressure is low or none.

Re: A leak down or compression test does not evaluate the valve stem/guide seals.
I made sure the valve guide seals were replaced the second time. Also, the valve guides were inspected and measured. Inspection of the valves, valve guides and exhaust ports did not revel any staining associated with oil getting by the valve guides (btw way, I have stop using synthetic oil for this reason as syn does not stain readly). After the latest maintenance, the spark plugs do not indicate oil is making to the cylinders. In addition the car runs excellent, 27 miles per gallon on the highway, regularly and if I stay under 90, 28.
For all the pain and strife (read: cost), I do not understand why the dealer did not replace the heads with new ones from the factory, as most dealerships that sell American cars would have. I agree, I suspect the rebuilt, not because of the diligence of the technicians, they are great, but because there are so many little things that could go wrong.
I have no intention to buy a new car, I cannot afford to, I like this car and also the new audis with the monogrile (like a mono-eyebrow) are butt ugly
