Default it's an oil trap drain, you have to have one if the garage is seperated from the house....

I think it's a city bylaw or something. If you think cleaning an undercarriage is bad, you should see cleaning one of these with a shovel!!!

Default I know I should have (esp. with CLR) but then water starts dripping on the lens....

and you can't see anything.

My A4 is parked on the street, for now, and Chicago winters can be brutal. How does it work? Does it really work?

Default Yes it does...

3 winters ago, we hit temperatures down to -50F (-67 F with wind chill factor), and the car started every time (back then I didn't have a garage so the car was always outside).
I just installed an oil pan heater on my girlfriend's Jetta last fall and she had no problems at all starting her car last winter either (her car is parked outside all day long).
They are easy to install and perform well, you just basically stick the heating pad on the oil pan, run the extension cord to the top and plug it in when needed.
