Finally making the BIG purchase!
I plan on ordering a Dolphin Gray 2004 A4 3.0 Quattro w/ Tip, Premium, UltraSport, and Cold Weather.
How do trade-in's work when a dealer has to order the vehicle? When I go to negotiate the purchase, will the dealer assess the value of my trade-in right then?

Yes....
Only thing that is hard when you order a car obviously is how much leverage you have over a car on the lot. This is even more maginified if you have a trade usually.
Reason being is, on a lot, like a used car, you can say "oh I really didnt want this or that option, or wish it had this, or dont like the color etc..." and use it to negoitiate. On a car you order, the dealer KNOW your gettting everything you want and nothing you dont....so they can charge a premium (Not sticker, but more then a car of the lot usually)

i would say ... dont bring up the trade in till u have finalized on the price of the car. and then negotiate on the trade in.
edmunds.com has a great write up on it. would be a good read before you go to the dealer.

3 steps -
1) Make your deal on the car's price
2) Make your deal on financing if applicable
3) Make your deal on the trade-in
Try and keep all 3 items separate. Dealers would rather tie everything together to muddle the actual price of the car.
