catalytic converter damage, like a matrix melt down. Primarily associated with severe misfires, exposing the cat excessive raw fuel that burns in the cat matrix, quickly overheating the matrix past the melting temp of the materials. AFAIK, this is the only condition that activates the "flashing" CEL.
Unlike the earlier Moronic EMS versions, the ME7.5.1 Engine Management System used on the B6 A4 1.8T does not have a secondary output stage as a separate device. Each coil-pack has a secondary output stage, among other functional parts, incorporated within each assembly.

Me: "Hunny, pull over the car you can not drive it like that. Call Audi Roadside and get a towtruck out, I'll come pick you up."
Now its sitting in the garage and I'm waiting for Audi/VW parts to open back up on Monday.
Parts closing on a Saturday at 2pm is weird in my opinion. Seems like there is extra business to be gained for a couple more hours still 6pm. Lots of garage mechanics out there needing parts.
