Flashing gas pump sign?

Don't have the manual handy, and got a new one with the cold weather.... is the flashing gas pump on the display supposed to indicate the gas cap is loose? - do they wear out?

The seal/gasket could've shrunk due to colder temperatures.

I wonder if a vac leak at the engine can trigger this?

I suspect that my suction valve is leaking due to a hard brake pedal when I first get in, and gunk around the plastic suction thingy, but I don't see any breaks.... maybe if finally fell apart.
