So while braking or coasting, no quattro. No?

Default no. it's always active. when you're braking all 4 wheels are still being powered, etc. now if you

have the clutch in, i guess technically you could say it's not active, but no more so than a rear wheel drive car with the clutch in

Default i figure since the gears in automatic while in drive are turning to some degree

it is "always" working, but YES - the more you accelerate it will work. Quattro has to send power to wheels that are slipping (its how it works). If you are not on the gas, then the car has no power to send to the gripping wheels.

The traction control works for you when you are braking.

See the pattern?

Default That is how the bmw system works, and I think the haldex

is only when under acceleration. but not 100% on that one.

Basically, yeah, quattro has zero benefit unless power is applied.

Default Learn more about the Torsen system here and more...

The Torsen (Quattro) system is pernament, full-time AWD...you're always driving 4 wheels with the engine. I suppose if you are in neutral, then no power is sent to the wheels, then there is no torque for the system to sense.

Click here to learn more about Torsen, ATTESA and Haldex
