front passenger side window not working (regulator?)

Hello All,
First time on this forum... I have 2004 A4 wagon. I hope you guys can provide some help.
Here is my problem. The power window on the front passenger side isn't working. I'm told it's probably the regulator (I have no idea what that is), but before I order the part and take it to the local glass place that told me this, I want to make sure that is the part I need.
So here is the behavior. When I try to use the power window button, I hear the motor clicking and trying to do something, but the window doesn't roll up/down smoothly, if at all. It jerks around and gets stuck and just doesn't work. When the window gets stuck open, I have to grab the window by hand and kinda force it up and hope that I remember to tell people not to touch the button.
Ok, so being a total mechanical/car newbie, I have no idea if this is a common problem. Hopefully what I described is clear and I can safely order the window regulator and it will be a routine fix.
EDIT: How hard is it to take off the door panel to see what's inside? Is there a DIY on this anywhere?

Yes it sounds like the regulator. I did mine a few months back and followed this write-up.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a4gen2/msgs/1080681.phtml">Nanotech's DIY</a></li></ul>

Thank you. I'll read thru and decide if I want to undertake this or just take it to the window shop.
Also, while I have your attention, do you or did you have noise (croaking and moaning) when turning the steering wheel, especially when it's really cold outside?
I'm not sure if this has to do with the steering wheel fluid or not because I get the noise even after I made sure the fluid level is good.
