Gear stick /gear **** question
Got a 2004 A4 1.8T 190 and want to change the gear ****.
Anyone know how to get the old gear **** off. I assumed it was a screww thread but it seems very tight?.
Thanks

Nope, not screwed on. **** slides onto a grooved Shift Stem...
and held into place, along w/the shift boot, with a metal Pinch-Clip. That pinch clip has to be loosened and free to spin. Then simply yank the **** straight up to remove.
Atleast that is how it is for my '03.

Agreed, but hard to explain....
you need to pull up the whole shift boot assembly (open the ash tray and pull up on the front and then push your fingers in the rear of the boot and pull up. Then you need to pull the whole boot assembly over the shift ****....that is where the **** is held on with the clamp Eddie Man referred too. I was able to loosen mine with needle nose pliers.
NOTE -- wou cannot replace with a screw on **** as the shaft is not threaded. With the AMS short shfter, you would be able to use a threaded type.
