The plug gap selected, is always a compromise in one way or another. The optimum gap varies, more or less, influenced by several factors. A few of the main things effecting the plug gap as "best", are: Available ignition voltage, differences in fuel batches/blends by season or region, local weather and environmental conditions, and depending on how the car is driven. These and many more factors are all involved with what the "best" plug gap setting for use in a particular engine.
On the theoretical side, the largest gap possible,(with diminishing benefit as gap increases,) without misfire, and providing consistent cycle to cycle ignition performance, is desired.
As a practical matter, the in-cylinder conditions of pressure, A/F, and other limiting factors requiring smaller plug gaps, determine the gap used in a particular setup.
