GOING UPHILLS, stuck in first gear -- grinding noises followed ('02 A4 1.8t)

Hey all, I was going up a steep inclined hill, I popped it in 1st gear, stepped on the gas and nothing happened -- RPMs went all the up to 5k and still nothing happening (i.e., stuck, not moving).
So, I held the clutch in all the way, brought the RPMs up to 4k and then slowly released it and then the car started moving...
Am I driving funny? Or, is Quattro playing with my mind and messin' with me?!
I had a '02 Jaguar X-type before the A4 in 1/2002 and I never had this problem at the same hill...it was AWD also with a 5-speed tranny.
Thanks guys!
