Got the 16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): Car fine now, but should I replace? (short story inside)
As I mentionned, my car shined the CEL/EPC lights in my face like a rogue detective from some bad cop drama last night...
I was in stop and go traffic at the time coming back from work, car started idling at ~1300 rpm, performance was affected. I pulled at a service station, scannned the car and saw the code:
16706 - Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal P0322 - 004 - No Signal/Communication
I then shut off the vehicle, and it wouldn't start again... <blood pressure rising>
Opened up the Bentley, and saw where the sensor was located. Throwing a hail mary, I simply discnonnected the sensor, cleaned as best as I could and put some dielectric grease on the contacts, and shoved it back in its housing... Voila! car started, and CEL/EPC lights went off... <blood pressure slowly returning to normal>
Now my Q: Should I replace the sensor seeing its not a HUGELY expensive part, and seems fairly easy to do? Or this a fluke thing, part of the German Electrical Gremlins' repertoire?
Sucks, I was just underneath the car doing my Mobil 1 0W-40 winter oil switch a few days ago...

I replaced mine a few weeks ago after having issues starting and an intermittent fault
has run perfectly ever since. There's a nice writeup with pics on Audizine. It's a 30min job max

Apparently, dirty contacts, but for piece-of-mind, replace the sensor. ..
Also examine the contact terminals in the harness connector, for damage that can cause intermittent loose connections.
Electrical faults can often be cleared by simply removing then reengaging harness connectors, by wiping the contacts and reestablishing contact. But there is no way to know for sure if the sensor is flaky or not, so replacement eliminates that question.
