Got a CEL -- bad CAT

A couple of days ago my check engine light went on so I brought my car to an independent shop that specializes on German cars. They ran a scan and determined that I had a bad catalytic converter.
Later I called my dealership and told them I had an independent shop tell me I had a bad CAT, and they told me to bring the car in so they could do their own diagnosis (which they told me would take 2 hours). They said they would reset my computer, and then I will take my car and go home. If, and only if, the check engine light comes back on, I should bring the car back and they will replace the CAT -- at no charge, since my car only has 50k on it.
I'm just curious why the diagnosis is going to take two hours.
