I have 73K miles on my car, and I have been noticing a grinding like noise in first gear since about 10K or 15K... Kind of sounds like teeth that are meshing together. It only happens in first gear, with the clutch out, and when the engine is under load. Meaning that if I am coasting along in first gear with my foot off of the gas, I don't hear the noise. As soon as I apply a little gas, I hear it.
Does not happen if the clutch is in and the car in gear, does not happen if I am not in gear and rev the engine. The noise is not too noticable inside the car, but it is definately noticeable from the outside. Hard to tell for sure, but I think it is coming form the front.
I tried to point it out to the dealer several times when under warranty, but they clamied they did not notice a problem. I did some searching here, and see that others have the same issue as well, but never found an exact cause. Some said they had the tranny replaced, only to have the noise re-appear.
Anyone know exactly what this is, if it really needs fixing, and how much it would cost to fix?

It almost sounds like your 1st gear syncro. What i would do 1st is change your tranny fluid. Get soem good red Line fluid in there. I've had a noisy 2nd gear when I bought the car, changed the fluid and the noise disappeared....not right away but after 2-3 weeks. Right after the change it was noticably lower than before and then slowly went away.
At 73K miles it won't hurt to do this even if that's not your problem. Find a good Audi shop and take it in. Ask them to diagnose it.

It usually happens after I have been stopped for more than a few seconds, and I try to put it into first. Its like it only goes halfway in. I can get it to go in by tapping the gas lightly, or letting up the clutch pedal and depressing it again. This happens once or twice every few weeks...
