Grinding noise downshifting into first...

strange. my car has never been able to go into 1st easily unless I'm going less than like 2 mph...
I got it when it had about 24K miles. Yet all the 6-speeds (3 different 2004+ 1.8T quattro cars) I've driven have no problem going into 1st at like 10mph.

Same here. Only time I shift into first is if I'm rolling a stop sign/light and around 2-3 mph.
Any speed higher is too much resistance. I never force the car into any gear -- always let it slip into gear with minimal force on my part.

its not a habit but sometimes i will downshift into first while moving
However I rev match and the tranny will let me shift no problem. I have heard with the 6-speeds this isn't a problem but with 5-speeds it is.

sure, the 6 speed a4 and the 6 speed S4 as well...
not that i'd recommend it for longevity, heh. The 5-speed in the A4 seemed like a weaker transmission regardless. I know there were a ton of people running higher torque setup who blew out 2nd gear, myself (actually the person blew my tranny who bought it after me), Drew, Greg, Jeff, etc. The 6-speeds seemed alot better.

at very tight slow speed turns it'll slip right in with some rev matching...
never ever had to grind it. It was really my only choice in a tight 180 degree turn as keeping it in 2nd put me down to low in the revs. For larger courses i'd never try it. not something i liked doing but luckily never had a grind at all.
