I get this fairly loud medium/high pitched groaning sound from my steering when I turn the wheel hard during low speed maneuvers such as backing up for parallel parking. My car is two weeks old, is this normal? Thanks.

as well as the tach fluctuating alot
I think its the power steering sopping up all your, uhm, power for the power, but also... it seems my wheel was rubbing the plastic... I had my wheel telescoped all the way in,
to get rid of the grinding noise I pulled my steering wheel slightly forward and now the grinding is less pronounced... still there...
and my dealer says I'm imaging the noise btw.
hope this helps![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

This is normal in ANY power steering car I have EVER driven. No biggie. I read somewhere that keeping the wheel cranked like that regularly isn't good for the system, but who knows?

I have the same noise. Mine has nothing to do with the position of the actual steering wheel. Mine sounds like its resonating throughout the steering rack thereby amplifying the noise. It's when you're turning the wheel without the car moving, or with the car moving very slowly.
Naturally the power steering pump has to work harder if the car isn't moving, but it seems that the Audi's just let you notice it more than other cars.
And yes, I have also heard that you never keep the wheel cranked on either extreme as its bad for the pump.
