i freaking hate rock chips. these things never patch up right, and you always see them. why couldn't it have been in my front windshield that i'm going to get replaced sometime because it's already pitted to hell???

I wonder how much a side window goes for...
last week I had to open my girlfriend's Jetta's door because the window was frozen, got out of the clamps, and fell at the bottom of the door. It's not that hard to take the window completely out of the door, might be worth it to find out how much the side window goes for and replace it.

it's probably more than i want to spend unless i got it at a junkyard
which sucks too, because i had an excellent opportunity to get some door glass for cheap.
maybe i should just do that...
by the way, what year is your gf's jetta? they're notorious for the glass falling into the door because the plastic clamp breaks.

2003 GLS, but I think...
that someone did some work in the doors (the car was bought used) and didn't tighten the clamps properly (2 metal clamps with rubber lips joined by a screw to "sandwich" the glass). The passenger door's window was off the track as well and I had to do that one as well.
Repairing the window would probably prevent the crack from spreading (I think the problem is that water gets in the crack and then freezes, widening/spreading the crack).

Most insurance plans have $50 glass deductible that won't effect your rates...
Tell them it's broken and you want it fixed. They aren't going to send out an adjuster and the glass repair guy isn't going to care how bad the chip is.
