The A4 is very similar to this car, correct? I am assuming he left the lights on or something like that. Isn't the car supposed to automatically shut off power-draining sources after a set period of time?

but if not properly maintained, can be shortened down as short as 3, maybe 2 years.
If there's a wiring short, this can drain a battery. Certain components do have automatic shutoffs to save from power draining, but not all components. It's hard to determine what may have caused the problem without more information.
