Detailing clay is used to pull crap out of the paint. If you lightly slide your hand over the paint and feels gritty, you need to clay.

http://www.erazer.com</a

that's why it was so smooth. clay bar removes contaminants and some clear coat. it's kind of like sanding the finish to smooth it out. that's why I'd only recommend it on a car that's a few years old or beat to hell. clay bar got it's start in body shops to remove overspray and etc...

The clay bar is NOTHING like sanding a car.
The clay bar removed contaminants, but the degree of clear coat remoted is microscopic. Clay bar is for 1 purpose: make the car SMOOTH.
BRAND NEW cars can benefit from clay bar. Brand new cars get transported on rail systems. Rail dust gets embedded in the paint. Smooth your hand over a brand new just delivered and washed/waxed car. If you feel ANY roughness, it's embedded contamiannts and clay bar is the only way to get rid of it.
Excessive clay barring is unnecessary. There is no need to do it more than once a year, maybe twice depending on if you live in harsh winter climates or drive on really gritty terrains.
It is absolutely NOTHING like wet sanding a car.
