Okay, so I've seen here more than a few times that you are not supposed to drive with your hand resting on the shifter, which is a bad habit I admit to having. In particular, I tend to instinctively pull back on the stick slightly in 2nd as I bring the clutch pedal up. I think I may have picked this up from my 1st car, a VW beetle which would quickly hop out of gear without some sort of reinforcement. I've probably been doing it ever since.
My question is, why is this bad and how bad is it? I try to remind myself not to, but I still do it from time to time, especially when I'm trying to be "fast".

Resting your hand on the shift lever is supposed to cause excessive wear as it keeps the stick fromvibrating and moving slightly - rocking in it's mounts as it's supposed to - prematurely (pun intended) wearing out the um mounts...
