Has anybody considered replacing the stock sub with a better one (and amp)?

Just curious if this is even worth consideration, or if it's just easier to throw a sealed box in the back. I'm considering adding a sub/amp to my Blose and I'd like to avoid losing trunk space, but not if it's going to suck.
Thoughts? If this is a decent option, recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Shaun

barely fits, but works. also dynamatted the heck out of the stock enclosure to ensure rigidity.
replaced stock amps and speakers with jl audio also. captured the line levels near stock amp to feed jl audio amps.
i would replace everything in the stock and bose setup except the head unit. they really sound bad in my opinion.

I'm not going down the road of replacing everything, but I figured that adding some bass should help the overall SQ. The stock setup just doesn't have any bottom end.
I'm going to talk to my installer and see what he thinks also.

I'm not sure how it's configured in the avant, but in the sedan, it's basically a free-air sub. I'm sure GTakacs knows exactly what's going on in the avant. :>

Curious to know how much watts RMS the Bose amp produces for the sub. A JL 8w0's optimum power is 80watts RMS, and a JL 8w3's optimum power is 125watts RMS. If the Bose amp produces numbers like that, a swap of the subs should be good right?

It is in the left corner behind the little door. The stock box is absolutely useless for anything. I have used the opening to mount my apms in there, it was enough space for those. Since the factory amp that runs the rear channels and the sub is also mounted on the sleaed box, it would either have to be removed or made a new mount for it if you remove the stock box.
Here is where the hole in the trunk is. You can also see the big blue connector that hooked up to the factory amp. The extra cable dangling from the blue connector is the power for the factory sub.

And this is what it looks like after everything is mounted in there.

I am going to stake out the other side of the trunk later to see if I could fit a 10" or a 8" sub in there. I'm just glad my car is in one piece right now, I'm not ready to rip it apart again for another couple of weeks.

Since the stock sub is a free air sub, you would have some problem finding a decent sub that runs ideally in free air applications.
I have seen an install that used the little cubby hole in the left corner of the trunk for a 10" sub, that might be the way to go for you as well. I'll try to find the link to the install for you.
Then you'll still have to hide the amp, and they tend to be fairly big if you want decent power. I'd recommend the Memphis 16-MC250d or a Memphis 16-MC500d, they are super small and very efficient mono blocks with nice power. I am using a 500D in my application.
