for the same price of a set of 17" winter tires, i can get a set of 16"s on steel wheels. why risk (high) damaging the rims?
also, swaping out the tires alone is not that good anyways.

I have Blizzak LM-22 235/45/hr17
They are amazing! Traction on ice and snow are super. Great stopping ability.Work fine in the dry too. Have to see what milage I get out of them.

Now while everyone else is sliding around and crashing on the way to the tire shop to get their tires swapped the first time it snows, you'll just be in your garage changing out the wheels. Plus when your winter tires wear out, it'll be much cheaper to buy replacements. All that in addition to what you said.. Sand and salt they put on the roads in the winter here will "sandblast" the leading edges of the spokes, plus you won't have to worry as much about scraping nice summer alloys on invisible (snow covered) curbs.

my only thoughts were:
Steel wheels:
- "stealth look" yeah right! (on a Dophin)
- 99% chance of NOT being stolen.
- Don't care about curb rash
- more mileage out of the summer rubbers.
