Default HELP !! 18020 - Engine Control Module Incorrectly Coded

After having replaced the APR code including the infamous 16985 checksum error by Revo code I still have an issue to solve: The ESP light stays on...

This is what VAG-COM returns:

Controller: 8E0 909 518 AK
Component: 1.8L R4/5VT 0003
Coding: 0004011
Shop #: WSC 79664
2 Faults Found:
18014 - Rough Road/Engine Torque Signal from ABS: Electrical Malfunction
P1606 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded
18020 - Engine Control Module Incorrectly Coded
P1612 - 004 - No Signal/Communication
Readiness: 0100 1100

The ABS controller holds the following DTC:
"18256 - Please check DTC Memory of Engine Controller P1848 - 35-00 - -"

Interesting fact may be that the ECU Software Coding and WSC were different before the unit was re-flashed with Revo code:
Software Coding: 0016711
Work Shop Code: WSC 78897

Any ideas on how I could fix this with VAG-COM myself or would I need to send the unit back to Revo or go to the dealer to fix it?

Thanks much!

Default I think Revo should keep the same WSC to prevent dealers from seeing it no?

Also you may need APR to be the one to send out a code fix for your original flash unless they said it was not necessary and just to go ahead and flash Revo. I'd call APR first and let them know the process you've gone through to find out if you needed a revision prior to updating to Revo. If you then decide to go with Revo, I would again make sure you WSC does not change by them and find out why it does if it happens again. cheers! Mike

Default Re: I think Revo should keep the same WSC to prevent dealers from seeing it no?

Thanks Mike.

Here's what happened...

I bought my A4 while I was living in the States in 2003/4. I moved back to Europe last year and after a couple of months I got the 16985 checksum error. I sent the ECU to APR's office in the UK. They tried to fix it on the bench, but that did not work so they sent it to APR's HQ in the States. End of their story: we can only fix it while it's in the car! I wasn't planning to take the car to the UK (I live in the Netherlands) nor to the States. Then I found an old message on this forum from REVO stating that they would be able to remove the error. That seemed like a good option (at the cost of another 500 pounds..) and to cut this long story short:
1. They did erase the error
2. The Revo software is really good, it feels much crispier (using basic settings!)

After having done some searches on this forum I was also able to recode the ECU just a minute ago using the original Software Coding which activated the ESP. The ESP-light has gone out and the error is gone.

Problem solved.

Cheers!
