Default HELP! Pinion bearing failure

Hey everyone-
After just 26K miles, the 5-speed in my B6 A4 Quattro is failing.

The pinion shaft bearing is making a TERRIBLE howl, even up on the rack.
I've been driving standard trans since i was 16 and can nurse a clutch to 100K+ miles. This is the work of the previous owner (should've checked it out better myself).

I don't have the know-how to get this done myself in a timely manner. HELP!

I need either a nice rebuilt unit, a NICE used 5-speed gearbox, or a reputable rebuilder in Atlanta.

Again, this is a 2003 A4 1.8T Quattro sedan, 5-speed in need of rebuild.

Any help is appreciated.

-Andrew

I've had a throw out bearing go in my 5-speed trans at around 40K.

Default Pulled trans and replaced clutch, p. plate, TOB, lubed, changed fluid.

Noise is still present. It's pinion bearing failure.

Default I saw 01A on the trans, but that doesn't seem to be it....

I did see 01A on the trans, but 01A seems to be a case stamping number or something similar.

The websites I'm looking at seem to show that the code should be either FPT, FNU, or FTZ.

Default Call a dealership, using the VIN, they can tell you the trans code. ....but

according to the Bentley, it is "FNU".

Default That bearing is only like $10-$30, right?. Why not replace it when you did the clutch?

Or am I thinking of the wrong bearing?

it's the main support bearing for the output shaft; definitely not a sunday job.
