Default hey guys and gals, my mom has a new avalon with only 600 miles and they are demanding she gets . . .

an oil change?

she obviously has barely driven the car in 4 months. is the oil change needed, or just their way of getting $50 plus out of her?

not like our audi bretheren, where we get free maintainence ;0)

thanks for the help

Default who's demanding that? Dealer? Call Toyota customer relations and check with them first ...

if it is mandated.

If it is not mentioned in her service/maintenance owners manual, but is necessary, then it should be performed free of charge, me thinks.

Default they keep saying "it needs" an oil change, regardless of milage. . .

im just not sure if it matters that the car's oil is about 5 months old, does that make a difference?

Default RTFM

Dealers love to sell extra services, but who knows this may be part of Toyota's breakin procedures, and it might even be free if it is.

What does the owners manual say? Dealer can't argue with that!

Default RTFM ...

If the manual says something like "change oil every 5K miles or every 6 months, whichever comes first," then you'd better follow it.

What kind of person buys a car to drive 600 miles in 5 months anyway??? LOL ! Shoulda just paid for a taxi ;-)

Default The Answer

Many cars - espeically Japanese get various deposits, iron filings and other crap in the oil during the first few hundred miles because of residue etc left over from production.

Thereforem even though the oil's viscosity is fine, it's filled with contaminants that could effect perfomance or be detrimental to the engine if left in their for prolonged period of time.

Just get it done.

Default 600 miles? what did they put in--olive oil?

Like everyone says, the manual should have the last word. But man, I've never heard of a car requiring a change that quick...especially newer models! My gut feeling--dealer gouge
