Default Hey guys, I dont know anything about A4s, I own an A6,but I have a question.....

A friend of mine owns a 2004 VW Jetta GLI 1.8T and he claims that 2004 Audi A4 1.8T has less HP than his. Is this true? I think he told me he has 180 hp and A4s 170. Is this true? or he is bull****ting me..?????????

Default He's right, not too sure of the exact numbers though. I believe it's because of the mounting of the

engine.

Default True. It is because the exhaust on the A4 must exit and turn 90deg.

The transverse engines are a straight shot into the downpipe. Less restriction allows a more aggressive program.

Default your friend is correct. all 2004+ 1.8t jettas came equipped as 180hp...

not just the GLI. the main factor here is two-fold.

1: engine orientation. the transverse 1.8t in the jetta only supplies power to the front 2 wheels. though this does not influence power as such, the orientation of the motor leads to a poer gain as described next...

2: turbo/exhaust manifold/exhaust orientation. these components are mounted more efficiently for the motor...less restriction in the manifold, a more efficiently mounted turbo (it is similar, but not the same as the longitudinal k03 sport found in the a4) and a shorter exhaust travel path all contribute to that exptra little bit of HP.

the audi tt 180 uses this exact same motr/configiration and of course makes the same power.

Default I disagree with my forum colleagues. The 1.8T longitudinal engine is a ULEV

rated engine. It was the first 1.8L engine to meet this new emissions level. In order to do it, Audi was forced to calibrate the engine such that the max hp was 170. I've read the technical article that Audi published in SAE. The Jetta's 1.8T was not a ULEV engine, so it was able to be tuned with a bit more power.

So for a more brief answer, yes, the Jetta's 1.8T has 10 more hp from the factory than the A4. But we're nicer to the environment. :-)

Default Actually it was 2002+ models that were increased to 180hp...

The previous engine only produced 150hp as did the B5 A4 until model year 2000 when Audi upped the 1.8t to 170hp. My '02 Jetta was fun but the audi is much nicer.
