I actually leave it in neutral, but I've seen a lot of people that keep the car in 2nd or 4th. Seems like the logical gear to be in would be 1st. Any reason behind picking 2nd over 1st?

The two people that have driven my car (other than me) have put it in 1st when parking.
I can understand why you'd want to put it in gear (to use the engine as another brake) but why would you pick a gear other than 1st? 1st has the highest gear ratio and thus would provide the most resistance thus making the best "brake".
Just curious why someone would put it in a different gear.

Why would the direction of the gear matter?
Seems like the drivetrain should be direct (i.e. no ratcheting, etc.) and the engine should have the same resistance to turning in either direction, right?
I guess I just don't see why the direction the car is likely to roll would make a difference.

sure... I understand the idea behind putting it in gear...
Question is, why would you ever pick a gear other than 1st? I've seen pictures on this site of people's interiors with the gear in 2nd/4th.
