I'm thinking that this might alleviate the creaks or just makes things worse :-)

Remove the door panel. Very easy to do on the B5.. Inner door handle screw. Then screw behind it. Door pannel lifts UP the away from door. There are two TORX-STAR silver bolts on either side fo the door. Loosen them with a helper to hold the door. A little movement can be alot on the tilt. Tighten and close up ... I did this on my B5 1.8T and the creaks went away !!!!!
