I was talking to someone at work about spending $1000+ on aftermarket exhaust and he said "just drill some holes in your muffler if you want to change the sound."
I have never heard of this. Do people actually do this?

It's an old trick that a lot of guys used to do to their stock exhaust when they were low on money. That's if they planned to throw away their stock exhaust down the line when they had enough money to get a real exhaust. Doing that is like having an exhaust leak.
An old friend did that to his 86 MR2 - it had a low bass tone, with an exhaust leak "after taste" sound when he lifted off throttle. Do it to a beater, not your A4.
