When the sunroof is opened, the cover is also retracted and there is no way to access the top of the cover.
In summer, I often leave the sunroof tilted and the cover closed to ventilate the heat inside the car. I think that's how the dust got in.
I really like the design of the sunroof cover. It has got vents to allow the heat inside the car to get out. Very well designed.

Not look down through your sunroof. Unless you have a moonroof which is actually not tinted (which becomes the difference between sun and moonroof).

Not sure how it is in the A4, but the A6 panel had to be removed from the outside. Here is the process for the A6 (when I replaced swapped out my interior trim for the RS6 alcantara):
First, you have to remove the sunroof glass to get at the 4 retaining screws for the shade panel. Tilt open the sunroof, and you will see on the sides of the rails a plastic trim piece on each side that nees to be removed. Under the trim pieces are the bolts that have to be removed to take the glass panel off. Once the glass is removed, you should be able to remove the panel, which is held into place with 4 small screws into clips that slide in the shade guide.
But if you are just cleaning the shade, then slide it shut and wirpe it down. Reinstall the glass and voila!
Here is a pic of the bolts that have to be removed (I think they are T-25 torx bolts, but I cannot remember)...

If you wanted to remove the shade panel (looking down frome the outside once the glass is removed) here are the screws in the guide clips (2 per side)...

I just upgraded to OEM RS6 seasts (the non-recaro version). I did not want to pay so much $$$ for recaro seats, but WOW! Those seats you got with the alcantara inserts are sweet!!!
