In most cases, you can return the car to stock and sell the parts separately.
Depending on how mechanically inclined he is, he could do it himself. Or if he wanted to pay a shop, he would still probably end up better than just selling it outright. Obviously there are certain modifications which cannot be reversed.
Some would rather own a highly modified 1.8T, while others would prefer an S4 or even a 3.0 parked in their garage. It's hard to confine a passion for automobiles into "this will depreciate faster" or "buy an S4".
