How has A4 improved from 99.5 to 04?
Before I jump back into the Audi family, I'm wondering how much the car has improved over roughly 4 years.
I hope, it's built tighter and less prone to creaks and rattles. Secondly, I'm hoping for shorter shift throws on the 1.8T 6 speed compared to the old 2.8 five speed. The clutch seemed rather heavy too.
I know there are tons of minor cosmetic changes inside and out, but what major ones will I notice immediately?

only you can tell us what you would notice immediately.....m...
i had a 99.5 myself. basically the interior gained more quality, and that is not saying the 99 was bad.
Dual climate control.
you didnt have this before, but there are no steering wheel shift tabs for tiptronic, unless the 04 gets them, not sure.
the seats sit better.
better wheel choices, for sport package.
better paint options, definately.
car is more solid, no more lines at the bottom of the back pillar line connecting to the trunk.
Better looking, if not more functional exhaust system.
looks bigger, and that is better to me, at least.
still has the sunroof noise.
key is still the same.
cupholder still the same, regardless of the YEARS OF COMPLAINTS.
better bose.
more room in back seat for child safety seats. this is true.
windshields are still weak.
tougher stance.
better leather, if you get it.
engines need maybe another year for refinements.
same free scheduled maintenance.
same sketchy service reps.
better respect at Valet parking.
second and third look at gas stations by other drivers, if you at leats tint the windows, that is.
I will keep you updated if anything else comes to mind.

!!!! The entire car is changed
nothing minor about it. Sit in it and test drive her and you will see it all first hand.
Urm, I'll just say the cars an order of magnitude safer, I'll let others list the other stuff.

Phew! that's quite a list!
Thanks, very complete.
I agree, it's much better looking.
I think the problem I had with my 99.5 was that I always felt the steering was a bit sluggish and the car wasn't as nimble/quick as I would like.
If the throws on a new six speed 1.8 is short, that might help. It would (I think) might be lighter in weight than my previous six cylinder.
As far as the engine is concerned, why do you say it still needs years of refinement? Hasn't the 1.8 been out for years?

well, i should have gotten the 3.0 is what i am thinking....but....
i took off an S4 on order for this 1.8T. shoudl have waited. in fact, will more than likely trade when the wait gets done.
i love my audi/vw's so that wont change. Just dissatisfied with the engine vs. what i am used to as far as reliability. APR is also part of my concerns.
I just cant stand the fact that I paid good money for this car, and sweat every day that a new problem will arise. Its not the best feeling in the world.
