a little bit of background first...
i've had an issue w/ my passenger side window for awhile. the glass started showing a defect... hard to describe, but it looked like some kind of impact, although the glass on the outside or inside for that matter wasn't showing any sign of impact... kind of like a drop a water following in water and making these circle/round waves... about 2-3 cms in diameter...
i took notice of it when a tiny hole appeared in the tint on the window... it kind of looked like somewhere used a very powerful heat source and burnt the film off... so at that time, about a couple of months ago, i took the car back to the shop that had done the tint, thinking there was a problem w/ the tint not w/ the window, but as they were just about to apply a new layer of film, they realised the defect was actually in the glass...
i had been meaning to drop by the stealership since but only got to do so before i went on vacation a couple of weeks ago. at that time i spoke w/ my service adviser who looked at it and said she would see what she could do... well apparently Audi turned down the request for a new window arguing it was how the glass was supposed to look like... ?!? morons...
anyway, back then my service adviser told me that the next step would be to bring the car back in and have the "warranty" adviser take a look at it...
well i finally did so this afternoon. i took the car to the dealership, parked it on the lot... this stealership is in town and they've got a fairly small facility... i used to park on the street in front, but i stopped doing so after hitting the curve w/ the Sportec while trying to avoid being run down by a city bus... anyway, this time i parked the Avant on the lot, right in front of the main entrance, i.e. everyone could see it....
well as i'm talking to the "warranty" advisor and showing him the defect, he's telling me that he was the one who talked to Audi. but now that he was seeing the defect he was realising that indeed it was not normal. however since Audi had denied the original request, he mentioned that unfortunately i would have to bring the Avant in when the regional assessor was in town for him to have a look at it, which was just fine by me. so as we're starting to talk about what would be a good time for me to bring the Avant in the window just shattered...
bwahahaha...
you should have seen his face... he was just closing the door when it shattered... he was like "WTF!?!?" looking at the glass which by now was starting to fall pieces by pieces all over the place...
me... well i just looked at him w/ a big smile on my face and said "well i guess i rest my case now"... he just replied "yeah, let me go an order a new window right now" and walked off inside...
i had been warned by the tint guys that this, the window shettering could happen, i didn't think much of it at the time, but i guess knowing that i was just not that surprised/shocked when it actually did...
now timing couldn't have been better!
of all the places this could have happened, there was no better place than there... it happened in front of their eyes, i don't have to explain anything, and it would probably have ended up being a hassle to get that covered under warranty... plus i wasn't even the one who closed the door... he did!!!
they're cleaning up the mess, which they had already started doing as i was leaving...
plus i don't have to worry about the car being left outside w/ a broken window as it will most likely be pulled inside... good thing it actually didn't happen while i was away... or worse when i had a passenger in car...
i asked the dude to take a pic and to email it to me...
in the meantime, i've got a loaner... just a Passat...
