I started noticing this the other day as I would come to a stop. The noise sounded like a ball in the back of the trunk hitting the seat as I came to a complete stop. Now as I am driving past a wall or a group of tress and hit a bump the noise becomes more apparent. Sounds like a loud clanking noise...I have a few ideas what it might be but I would like to hear from you guys first before assuming something.
Thank you for your help. I have a 2001.5 a4 1.8t QMS

I had a similar sound coming from the rear on my 98 2.4 Quattro. I put the car on a lift to find out that the rear muffler mount had rusted away from the muffler. When I make a turn or go over a bump it sounds like a popping noise. It is an easy fix with an aftermarket mount from PepBoys or VIP. Hope this helps.

then it's likely that the brake pads are loose inside the carrier. Usually, the adhesive used to attach the pads came undone. Should be an easy fix.
