The mailing lists approved synthetic or synthetic oil blends. I knew that this 10,000 mile scheduled maintenance was gonna cause problems. It's wayy too long to go without an oil change, and I suspect that the majority of Audi owners do it.

One, these motors should have used synthetics from the get go.
Two, because Audi pays for the maintenance on these cars, they decided to go on the cheap side and not use synthetics.
Three, another factor that Audi did not count on was that North American car owners do not usually follow the prescribed oil changes, this with the dino oil compounded the problem.
Four, The 1.8T runs hot, especially in the head area which cooked the oil.
Five, the longitudinal mounted motors in the A4 and Passat, because of their oil pan design ran with less oil capacity, up to 1 litre less which in turn compounded the #4 reason just above.
Now they figure by going to the bigger oil filter (~ +1 litre) and using the synthetic they will have solved a big chunk of the problem.

is that they sold us something for a much greater price than it's now worth. THis type of an issue hurts everyone by depriciating the value of the car, especially with the fact the the letter was made public, not that it was not the right thing to do. My opinion is that we should be reimbursed X amount for the radical depriciation of the vehicle. Just my 2 cents!

it seems to me that on a leased vehicle you would think they would care but they told me yesterday 10,000 is the number for oil changes. If it was my car I would do the alternates and pay the frickin' $26. but they don't seem to care so why should I . It's not gonna cause any big problems on my 39 month lease , at least I don't think so. It's the next guy that might have the problem..I'm saving a bunch of $26. at 39 months I guess but it's poor technique as far as I'm concerned! The service guy didn't even know if my car has the new oversized filter...I just picked the car up 3 weeks ago...1.8 A4 Khaki. Now with 1300 miles on it. Gets average of 20+ mpg using 93 octane...it's a Tiptronic so probably worse than my TT was.(5 speed)Plus heavier too! Maybe after a while it will get a bit better. This oil thing aggravates me but I have to keep reminding myself there is NO rationale for spending the bucks on alternate oil changes with a lease ...Agree? or Disagree?
