I agree. I have the 30 gig ipod video (5g). I bought the icelink from Dension last week. They shipped it free after I asked with a total of $199. I understand they can be had online for 175. F-ing accessories are almost as expensive as the ipod itself. I bought the keys to remove my Bose Symphony (with 6-disk integrated changer) from Ebay for $8 per pair (you need 2 pairs). You can download the installation instructions from the website, which were quite good, and install it in under 30 minutes. I have mine wired to come out beside the glove box. I still have to purchase a good mounting unit, but the wire is relatively unnoticeable. The unit itself is not intuitive, although the instructions are fairly straightforward, and once you read them (which I hate doing) it is somewhat easy to use. The sound is where the money's at making the device worth it. It is infinitely better than the FM transmitter I just smashed with a 9-iron because it sucked so bad. (Too many interfering stations here in Houston and had to switch stations through which the ipod played too frequently.) You can really only control the playlists from the stereo unit, although you can switch into a mode where you control the play just on the ipod. While not safe, I prefer the freedom that this allows. In that mode, you still can advance songs, etc on your stereo, but not albums/playlists. The quirks are the same ubiquitous complaints that other forums contain, including that the first 2-3 seconds of a song are sometimes cut off and the unit may take up to 30 seconds to change modes. Anyway, damn worth it the money and effort. Sorry for the length...

How about this? I made better use of a factory storage compartment that came on pre-99.5 B5s with fewer options. The drawer is motorized and slides back into the dash when not in use.
I hijacked the stock audio inputs for the trunk-mounted changer. A signal relay does the switching automatically, so the CD changer still plays when I'm not using the iPOD.

Full details about how this was built
