I'll stand by 8500 'til the day I die...
My dad is a V1 owner. He won't listen, because V1 owners have their own special little clique or something...
But I mentioned here a while ago that on a family trip with two cars, playing leap frog on who's leading at various times, but always within feet of each other, my passport nailed things his V1 never picked up on. But they were pretty even out on the highway. Within miliseconds sometimes (you could see his picking up through his rear window while mine may have already been chirping a second or so). What made the passport stand out over the V1 (or at least HIS V1), was that when we hit cities, mine wouldn't go off over stupid stuff, and his was always going balistic when nothing was there. I don't want something that cries wolf. The V1 is great, but head to head, to me it isn't worth the extra money. No one with a V1 will tell you that.

which mode did he have his in?
I bought my dad a passport because it got better reviews for the auto mode. I used his for a while, and drove across the country with it. I liked it, but I do like my V1 better. When in the advanced logic mode it doesn't get too many false hits and if it does I know which direction they are coming from so I can see if it's door openers or whatever.
I guess it's personal preference, but I do really like the arrows. Is it worth the extra 100 bucks.... that I can't answer.
I do think it's a little wierd how heated people get over this subject though.

Spend the extra on the V1. The arrows, counter, and band display is...
...what distinguishes this detector from all others. Range is equivalent to or better than the Passport models. City falsing is easy to minimize (in the L mode) but you don't want to turn it off. Some smart cops out there have radar detectors do. They look for hot spots and then wait inside them. Someone with a lesser detector goes by thinking it's just an automatic door or some such "innocent" noise signal. Wack-a-mo! Lights on, pull over, please sign.
The V1 saved me twice last week from CHP working the 5 North and the old road. They're in all black or all white unmarked cruisers with no lights on the outside. Strong Ka band signal. V1 was getting reflections over three miles away.
