A4 (B6 Platform) Discussion Discussion forum for the B6 Audi A4 produced from 2002-2005

I put in some serious time reading up on oils for 1.8t, this is what I found and how I'd rank them.

Default good stuff. was there one thing in particular that had you place..

..the other 4 (#2-5) above the SuperSyn, and what properties gave Chevron the almost top spot? Would not have considered Chevron oil very strongly prior to reading this.

Default why is Kendall at #1? I've seen very little info on it at theoildrop.com...

Is it strictly based on its specs rather than user reviews/oil analyses?

Thanks!

It's mentioned as testing nearly the best.

Default Yes, many posts. As I read, I noticed otc oils being less contraversial&decided on"Mercedes list"

as a starting point. (pun intended) The list appeared to have the favoured otc oils on it already, how could you go wrong? These oils were recommended by private testing as well as personal experiences. I arranged the order with as little presonal bias as possible. Admittedly, I had some info going into the research, mainly that M1 is not the best, and I could go into that specificly. It is simply over-rated by people who know that Group IV (M1) costs more than III to produce and resent paying the same for Group III BUT the punchline is other good otc III oils test better than M1 especially if you consider the hard deposit PAO IV issue. Also the 0w is for mpg but 5w is a better weight and the ACEA3/GF-4 spec means nearly no EP additives. Group III + state-of-the-art additives is best in a street car.

Default Yes, there is little Kendall GT-1 info there. It's got top recommendations from other places.

It is a benchmark, a "given" that the GT-1 is the best commercially available oil. Mostly it has a long racing history and is the choice not of techs, but of motorheads.
