I put in some serious time reading up on oils for 1.8t, this is what I found and how I'd rank them.

it's possible that Kendall has changed their formula since the the article was written.
Three things seem to get in the way when trying to research motor oils.
1. How dated the information is.
2. How much of the information is opinion and how much is fact.
3. How much of the information on class III oils is hype and how much is fact.
Now that group III oils can be advertised as 'synthetic' (synthetic has been ruled a 'marketing' term) and the fact that group III oils cost much less to manufacture, the oil companies are spending a lot of money on group III hype. Some are even dropping their PAO synthetics in favor of group III because they can make more money on it (and say they made the change because group III is 'better').
From the reading I've done, the advantages I see to the group IV oils are uniformity of quality, lack of contaminants, and longer life. Even these are mostly not pure PAO products. They are mixed with group V esters and other additives in order to address high temperature surface buildups, seal issues, and the like.
Since reading your 'summary', I, too, have been doing a lot of reading on the subject. Quite frankly, I'm going to keep watch on the new Mercedes-Benz 229.5 spec oils. From my perspective, by the time it's time for my next oil change, there should be some U.S. 'over the counter' 229.5 spec oils available and that's probably what I'll purchase.
By the way, what ever happened to your campaign to get us all to switch to the Shell Rotella T?

http://members.aol.com/c1j1miller/oil.html</a

All this work actually made picking out an oil kind of easy. I don't even know what the bottle looks like. Now I really want it!

Like in a diesel and a turbo 1.8t (chipped). 0w seems a little thin. Mobil 1 basicly tests in the middle of the field, even though it supposedly uses a sophisticated production method. If you use any oil on the Mercedes list, it *is* good oil. 5w-40 is the best viscosity range, 0w-XX is for mpgs.
