I smoked a E36 '95 ~ '99 BMW M3 last night...
Was doing about 80mph, then I shifted down to 3rd... I caught up with me till I shifted to 5th about 115+ mph that time. I just launched off. Thought M3s are much faster than my car... weird, but felt proud! hehe.

The E36 M3 isn't as fast as you think. Don't under estimate our cars either......(more)
The E36 M3:
240hp @ 6,000 rpm
225 lb-ft of torque @ 4,250 rpm
The 3.0:
220 hp @ 6300 rpm
Torque 221 lbs. ft. @ 3200 rpm
The 1.8T "chipped" (depending on chip):
200-220hp
Torque 220-250 lbs. ft.
It's very possible to be 'head to head', and depending upon driver and conditions, beat the E36, and if so, not by much.

The E36 IS as fast as you think, Jedi.
Give me a break with these multiple M3-bashing threads.
I just picked up my 2002 A4 3.0. I've been driving M3's for the prior 5 years and the ONLY WAY my A4 would come close to touching my 1998 M3 is in a light drizzle to a snow storm.
Do me a favor - relax, take a deep breath and remember you're in a WONDERFUL sports sedan. I love my A4 already but it is NOT an M3 (and that sir, isn't necessarily a bad thing).
ps - if y'all want fast, go buy a freak'n motorcycle.

I'm not bashing the M3! I'm just trying to bring our A4s NEAR to the "M3" caliber, by no means....
...am I bashing the M. I'm looking at the E46 M as we speak because I DO want a faster car, and when the S is released, maybe go for that. HOWEVER, don't misconstrue my postings for M bashing. I emphasize in these postings to keep an open mind and to acknowledge the A4 at its best and the E36 M3 short of its best. It's at those very situations where our A4s will have that edge. The Bimmer and Audi are superior cars in many aspects.
