im another convert from mobil 0W-40 to Castrol syntec euro formula 0W-30....
and all i can say is wow. This is what i should have been using from the first service. So much smoother throughout the whole rpm range. Less coarse feeling and sounding when in the mid-upper rpms. Wish i had made the switch before 60k of mobil. I recommend this oil, my engine seems to love it.
Currantly driving around with no e brake becasue my cables bound up and i had to disconect them until the parts come in, but at least the engine is loving the new oil, thanks to Audi Junkie and others for the suggestion....

You dont want "thick" oil for winter....
Quite the opposite.
You want thicker oils for summer, thinner for winter. As oil heats up, it get thinner.
Now adays we have "multi-grade" oils.
Your Ow-40 and OW-30 are multigrade. Good for conditions needing a 0(zero) weight oil(winter), and good for conditions needing a 30 or 40 weight oil(summer).
Multigrade oils(Ow-30 & 40) you can run year round. Unless you live in weather extremes, like Siberia, or the Sahara. ;O)
