I did a search for tires, but could not quite find the right thread- so I am trying a new one.
I am looking for a new set of tires for my '02 Avant with the sport suspension- 235/45-17.
People have mentioned the Kuhmo's, Nitto's, Dunlops, etc. but not sure what works well with Audi's and what other people have tried? I do not think it is worth moving to Michelins or Pirellis given my wife drives the car usually.
Any advice? Also, my dealer told me that I probably needed a realignment since my tires are wearing on the inside and outside edges of the fronts (and rear since I rotated front to rear). To me, this seems like normal tire wear, but curious if anyone has had any alignment or tire wear issues. I got 22K on the original tires, so I am not thinking that the alignment is off especially since the tires show this same pattern of inside and outside wear on both the left and right tires in the front. Perhaps I need to run with a higher PSI in the tires to prevent the edges from wearing. The dealer says the only group capable of aligning the A4 is Audi (at a cost of $250). Thanks

some good deals (Just don't expect good service). But as far as an alignment goes, if you have an independent Mech you trust you can have him do the alignment. There's NO NEED to have Audi do it for $250. Even if the tire wear seems normal to you, you might want to consider aligning it if you have a place that'll do it for under $100 (My Mech. does it for $70). But if you think it's normal wear and you have to have the alignment done for $250, you might as well let the cheap tires your looking for wear a little faster and save the $250 for the next set. Also keeping the air at the right PSI is crucial to tire life and also gas mileage.

That is a good one...thanks for the laugh for today. I think the Hunter alignment rack people would have a different opinion on that subject. There are lots of good places that can align an Audi just fine. Obviously, don't go to a place that doesn't have the proper equipment, including the special all wheel drive attachments, and go to a place that actually does Audis on a regular or semi regular basis.
I got to a race car prep place from time to time..or a place that specializes in alignments only.

My tires are 235/45-17. They might be getting a touch louder as they wear, but I'm not 100% sure on that yet.

Or if you don't really need UHP tires, Falken Ze-512 is quite cheap being a HPA/S tire.
A bit of pressure should help with the wear. If it's symmetric, I don't think you need an alignment...
