I got a call back from Hella about adding Raintronic to the 2002 A4. Check out www.hella.com if you don't know how it works.

They said it would work fine with the 2002 A4 using the universal kit - the part number is 87317 and is available in the U.S. from the vendor PUMA - phone number 800-354-3552. The kit will include a wiring diagram, but unfortunately, the whole thing costs $229 + shipping from PUMA. A bit much for my taste (it doesn't rain THAT much around here), but I thought I'd pass the info on.

It would be great to see install procedures/photos if someone does get it!

"regarding your question for the raintronic I am sorry to tell you that in our opinion it will not work. The new bus-system of the different new vehicles does not allow our control unit. This raintronic program is already deleted out of the Hella-aftermarket range so we do not any further investigations on mounting research for new application. Because of this we can not be sure if it will work or not. We did not make investigations especially for your requested car but for other new generation cars like DC, BMW and VW."
